Preparation
Aiming at quantifying the influence of nano-particles on surface roughness of medium carbon steel while machining on lathe machine. In a team of three, we synthesized Aluminum Oxide nano-particles.
Aluminum oxide is prepared by the Solution Combustion process. Urea is taken into a beaker and stirred for 30 minutes on a magnetic stirrer and, placed on a hot plate (>373.15°K). On rapid heating of the solution containing the redox mixture, it boils, froths, smolders, flames, fumes and catches fire. The mixture burns with an incandescent flame to yield Aluminum Oxide.
Machining on Lathe
Medium carbon steel was machined with 3 parameters for the depth of cut and spindle speed each, leading to 9 samples of the machined steel.
The machined samples were tested for Rockwell hardness and surface roughness and graphs were plotted for making sense of the data.
conclusions were drawn after consultation with subject matter experts.
Conclusion
-
Splashing of nano Al2O3 particles on medium carbon steel changed the surface roughness of the medium carbon steel at a consistent speed of 450 rpm.
-
It keeps the annihilation of medium carbon steel structure during the rubbing process which may be one of the reasons fo counter wear components of nano Al2O3 particles. At high rotational speed and high depth of cut, the hardness diminishes, resulting in excessive degradation of Al2O3 nano particles on medium carbon steel.
